The space above the water closet can be used for placing shelves. You may either get your carpenter to fix a few wooden planks or glass shelves at desired heights above the closet or opt for readymade units. This would be the perfect space to add a few plants to enhance your bathroom décor.
Undercounter storage
In compact bathrooms, freestanding washstands with storage space beneath the sink makes great sense. Shelves should be easy to slide in and out, so that you can adjust their height at will. It is also advisable to store small items in containers so that they do not fall out every time you open and close the cabinet door.
Another important point to note while doing undercounter storage is that you must ensure that the space is waterproof. You should also provide access to plumbing. Any leak in this area would ruin your items, so make sure you perform periodic inspections.
Do’s and Don’ts for Bathroom Storage Design
- Choose a style that is easy to keep clean and dust free.
- Make sure the colour of your storage unit matches with that of the tiles and ensure that the depth is similar to that of the toilet tank.
- Items taken out frequently should be kept at the front of a wall cabinet, somewhere between waist-level and eye-level. Bulkier items such as towels and cleaning equipment are best stored on lower shelves.
- In drawers used to store small bottles, make sure you also place a rail to hold the bottles in place and to prevent them from falling out when the door is opened or closed.
- If you intend to share your bathroom with others or let visitors use it, keep your intimate and personal products hidden from view.
- A fresh pile of neatly folded towels is a great way to accentuate the looks of the bathroom, but make sure they are well aired and are not damp.
- Avoid deep shelves so that your items don’t become lost or forgotten at the back.
- Mirrored cupboard fronts often have magnetic catches, making handles unnecessary. This leaves a clear, reflective area that gives the impression of additional light and space.
- If you use the bathroom storage to store your medicines, make sure you keep them away from reach of children.
