Natural Lighting in houses
Lighting is a very important aspect of interior design as well as healthy living. It enhances the aesthetic feel of a house. Lighting also creates the mood and ambiance of your interior spaces. In short lighting can make or break the ambiance of a room. There are two ways in which a building can be lit up. They are artificial lighting and natural lighting. In this post we try to understand more on natural lighting.
Natural lighting is considered to be superior to artificial lighting as it is evenly distributed and therefore doesn’t cast as many shadows. Also, it is less intense and less tiring on the eyes. In addition, the ultraviolet rays in sunlight are a natural antiseptic. Sunlight can also prevent the growth of fungi and other micro organisms inside your house.
Importance of natural lighting in residences
The importance of sunlight and the health benefits associated with it have been proven beyond doubt. To sum up, we can list down a few of the many advantages of sunlight here.
Sunlight is less expensive
Modern advancements in home design and construction have come up with several tools to enhance the amount of sunlight in your rooms. Moreover the modern day doors and windows are designed in such a way as to save energy. Put together, using natural lighting in homes is sure to be less heavy on your pockets.
Sunlight can lift your mood and boost your productivity
Studies have proven that people who work in sunlit areas are more productive than those who are not exposed to natural light. Plan your kids’ study area in such a manner that it is naturally lit. This little tip is sure to boost your little one’s creativity and enhance their performances. Sunlight is said to increase the brain’s release of a hormone called Serotonin, that plays a key role in boosting a person’s mood and help a person feel calm and focused.
Sunlight is healthy
Some of the health benefits associated with sunlight are listed below.
- Sunlight is a free source of vitamins B and D
- Natural light boosts your immune system and improves blood circulation and complexion.
- Ultraviolet rays in the sun are naturally antiseptic.
- Natural light increases endorphins and serotonin, thereby boosting your mood and productivity.
- Daytime sun helps to sleep better at night.
- Sunlight helps your indoor plants and pet grow well.
Energy from the sun is sustainable
In addition to using sunlight for natural lighting, you can also harness solar power for your energy needs. This can give us a more sustainable source of energy for the years to come.
Plan well to use optimum sunlight inside your house
The amounts of sunlight that each room receives vary based on the position of your house and the time of the day. So it is best to plan the interior spaces beforehand to decide how the available sunlight can be put to the best use. Consider the purpose and function, atmosphere or mood of each room, the privacy needs etc. This will also help to modulate the available light to suit the family’s needs.
Points to consider for optimum sunlight
- Along with sunlight come the heat also. If not carefully planned, natural lighting may result in uncomfortable heat buildup in your rooms. Blinds with aluminium backing reflect the heat back out through the windows, thereby containing the heat to a certain extent.
- Use large sized windows and doors – this is a sure shot way to increase the amount of sunlight falling into your rooms. Modern windows come with minimal framework and more exposed glass. Usage of double glazed glass will address the security aspects as well. Replacing a solid wooden door with a patio door will not only increase the sunlight, but also enhances the aesthetics of your living room. You can also try to use glass wall spaces that use glass blocks to let light penetrate without compromising on privacy, security or energy efficiency
- Place wall mirrors across the windows to double the amount of sunlight that enter the room. The mirrors will also make your rooms look bigger.
- Choose your room color scheme wisely. Dark shades will absorb light and make the room look dull. However lighter shades act as a mirror and reflect the light around the room. Also if you paint the ceiling a few shades lighter than the walls, the room will appear brighter, taller and bigger.
- Add skylights if possible. Remember the single glass tile amidst the clay tiles in the roof of your ancestral home?
- Solar tubes are another cheaper variation of skylights that you could try. These are tubes with polished mirror interiors that channelize sunlight to your rooms. They are also known as sun tubes or tubular skylights.
- Take care to avoid placing your wooden/leather furniture on the direct path of the sunlight as it may cause your furniture to fade out easily.
- Try to incorporate energy saving passive house construction techniques, as much as possible.
Window ideas for a sunlit room
Even when you go for energy efficient, natural lighting options, there are ways in which you can take care of your family’s privacy needs. This can be done by selecting appropriate blinds, curtains or shutters. Some options are listed below.
Opaque glass
Opaque glass windows serve the dual purpose of privacy as well as transmission of natural light. They are available in several textured finishes and makes curtains or blinds unnecessary.
Curtains
Curtains offer a myriad of options to emphasize your taste and style to enhance a plain window. Simple, light draperies are very much in vogue to enhance the looks of your room. However curtains attract dust and need to be cleaned often.
Vertical Blinds
Although more popular as commercial office decor, vertical blinds are highly effective in controlling sunlight. They are more suitable for large windows and allow air inside easily. However, it doesn’t rank too high on aesthetics.
Venetian Blinds
These are adjustable blinds and allow total or partial sunblock. They are available in plastic, aluminium, bamboo or wood and allows very good air circulation. However the slats are prone to collecting dust and are difficult to clean.
Roller blinds
Roller blinds are simple, sleek window covering option. They are available in a large variety of colours, textures and patterns and come in attractive rates. Motorized roller blinds are also available these days. The disadvantage is that the motor mechanism may fail and require replacement. Roller blinds are not suitable for narrow or odd shaped windows.
Shutters
Wooden shutters or louvered windows were most commonly used in our ancestral homes. They were extremely secure and the adjustable slats added light control. However since shutters are to be custom made, this is an expensive option.
A tip for those who work at home.
If you work at home, it is important that you choose a work environment that has plenty of natural light. However, direct sunlight can cause glare on your computer screen. To avoid headache and strain to your eyes, position your workstation at right angles to the light source.
A note before bringing down the curatins
Natural lighting is any-day better than their artificial counterparts; for the health benefits and the aesthetics they offer. So opt for natural lighting and let the sunshine into your rooms and your life 🙂
