Storage space is a luxury when it comes to small sized homes and apartments. However, if you properly plan for storage during the design of your interiors, even small spaces can be transformed into beautiful and efficient storage spaces.

Let’s have a look at some bathroom storage ideas in detail today. Storage space is usually limited in bathrooms, but if well planned you can have shelves and open units to display attractive items. You may also use closed cupboards for utilitarian items like toilet tissues, cleaning products etc.

Remember, a bathroom reveals a lot about its owner. So, make sure you design yours in such a manner that it suits your personality.

Bathroom storage, or any storage for that matter can be broadly classified into three categories.

Freestanding storage, Wall storage and Undercounter storage.

Wall storage

Barring the space taken up by windows and doors, the bathroom walls offer great storage opportunities. Shelves and wall cabinets leave the floor areas clear, and your items can be tucked in within arm’s reach, just above or below the eye level.

A wall niche would be a great idea for compact bathrooms. It helps to neatly tuck away all the items inside the wall, thereby eliminating the need for protruding storage units.

Wall mounted storage can be done either as open shelves or closed cupboard storage.

Gradated shelf units, where the lowest shelf is the shallowest, will not obstruct the bathroom user.

To avoid the clutter caused by the everyday items on countertops, you may use a closed cupboard. Frosted glass may be used to make semi opaque doors that helps you identify the items stored. Mirrored shutters help to make the room look more spacious.

Less frequently used items can be kept out of sight in overhead storage units placed just above the bathroom doors, without obstructing the traffic.

Free Standing Storage

Bathroom cabinets and shelf units that stand alone are a perfect fit for large bathrooms. However, if you do not have the luxury of space, you may opt for cabinets that is raised above the floor. Go for cabinets with adjustable shelf heights that suit the items you wish to display.

A multi-tiered trolley can store towels, toiletries, and cosmetics where they can be seen. An advantage of the trolley is that they can be moved easily to the activity area where the products are needed. Make sure the trolley can glide through the floor and the drawers don’t stick out.

If you prefer closed storage, a trolley with covered units may be useful to store bottles of varying heights. Moreover, items stored in confined spaces are less susceptible to dust.

The space above the water closet can be used for placing shelves. You may either get your carpenter to fix a few wooden planks or glass shelves at desired heights above the closet or opt for readymade units. This would be the perfect space to add a few plants to enhance your bathroom décor.

Undercounter storage

In compact bathrooms, freestanding washstands with storage space beneath the sink makes great sense. Shelves should be easy to slide in and out, so that you can adjust their height at will. It is also advisable to store small items in containers so that they do not fall out every time you open and close the cabinet door.

Another important point to note while doing undercounter storage is that you must ensure that the space is waterproof. You should also provide access to plumbing. Any leak in this area would ruin your items, so make sure you perform periodic inspections.

Do’s and Don’ts for Bathroom Storage Design

  • Choose a style that is easy to keep clean and dust free.
  • Make sure the colour of your storage unit matches with that of the tiles and ensure that the depth is similar to that of the toilet tank.
  • Items taken out frequently should be kept at the front of a wall cabinet, somewhere between waist-level and eye-level. Bulkier items such as towels and cleaning equipment are best stored on lower shelves.
  • In drawers used to store small bottles, make sure you also place a rail to hold the bottles in place and to prevent them from falling out when the door is opened or closed.
  • If you intend to share your bathroom with others or let visitors use it, keep your intimate and personal products hidden from view.
  • A fresh pile of neatly folded towels is a great way to accentuate the looks of the bathroom, but make sure they are well aired and are not damp.
  • Avoid deep shelves so that your items don’t become lost or forgotten at the back.
  • Mirrored cupboard fronts often have magnetic catches, making handles unnecessary. This leaves a clear, reflective area that gives the impression of additional light and space.
  • If you use the bathroom storage to store your medicines, make sure you keep them away from reach of children.
